Fairfax journalists forced to treat blackout as good news story

31 March 2009 | Joe Stella

A massive power failure that plunged Sydney’s CBD into darkness for several hours yesterday has drawn joking comparisons to last weekend’s Earth Hour.

Read more background from The Sydney Morning Herald.

In line with Fairfax Earth Hour policy, Sydney Morning Herald journalists were required to treat the blackout as a huge success.

Fairfax Media rejected early estimates that 100,000 people were affected by the failure, saying instead that 100,000 people had “participated”.

These reports were later corrected to recognise “up to one billion people” who got into the blackout spirit by getting themselves trapped in lifts.

A fault in a cable under the harbour linking the CBD to a transmission centre in Lane Cove was lauded as “a vote for the planet.”

The blackout taught us all that living in the goddamn dark just takes a few simple steps—anyone can do it!
