Jovian climate change makes Copenhagen all the more urgent

Scientists at the University of California, Berkeley say that one of Jupiter’s most distinctive icons, the Great Red Spot, is changing shape and falling in size—but it’s impossible to tell why.

Climatologists note that the changes, and the difficulties in identifying the cause, make a tough new carbon-emissions deal at Copenhagen all the more urgent.

Indeed, the lack of knowledge about the Jovian atmosphere increases our responsibility to act immediately.

But rich countries may be planning to use Jupiter’s own lack of action to reduce emissions as an excuse not to act, even though Jovian policymakers lack the resources and existence to agree to deep emissions cuts.
