UNSW staff demand 20% raise in exchange for highly theoretical productivity gains

5 June 2009 | Joe Stella and Jebediah Cole

Despite the downturn, University of New South Wales academics are agitating for a 20 per cent pay rise.

Read more background from The Sydney Morning Herald.

The pay increase will come in exchange for highly theoretical productivity gains.

UNSW responded to the pay demand from the School of Philosophy by saying they can have the money if they can prove it exists.

Union officials say that the demands are more than fair: the uni’s academics can’t be expected to speak out against capitalism all day unless they’re making the big bucks.
Another 20 per cent on top of the 90-odd thousand they make already: with that kind of scratch they could buy enough elbow patches to make a whole leather jacket. Hell, they could buy a leather jacket with tweed elbow patches.
