A 43-year-old British man is facing up to 70 years in a US prison after allegedly hacking into military and NASA computer systems.
Gary McKinnon is thought to have used a 56kbps modem in the attack, but the next webpage he visits could take 70 years to load.
By then, who knows how much faster dial-up internet will have become. Futurists are already speculating about lightning-fast 72kbps modems.
Mr McKinnon’s mother has been a vocal opponent of the extradition, apparently unaware that Britain’s extradition treaty with the United States does not cover having a note from your mum.
US authorities say that Mr McKinnon had few problems accessing more than 2000 computers throughout the Pentagon, although he was unable to connect to the big colour printer next to the stationery cabinet.
Mr McKinnon is understood to have broken into the sensitive computer systems in a bid to expose the US government’s UFO discoveries and promote ‘moral’ alternatives to fossil fuels. Family and friends of the accused say that he suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome, which explains his totally delusional beliefs. It may also explain the UFO stuff.
In a bid to ensure that other hackers can’t follow in Mr McKinnon’s footsteps, the Pentagon has implemented advanced security measures to prevent access to data, including passwords, encryption and an IT helpdesk.
As an extra precaution, the Pentagon has protected itself from inquisitive amateur ufologists by not having ever made contact with any sort of alien vessel, ever.
