A number of doctors have slammed the growing trend of diagnosing children with “oppositional defiant disorder” (ODD) simply because they misbehave.
Symptoms of ODD include loss of temper, argumentativeness and refusing to accept that they have ODD.
Doctors Jon Jureidini, Nanu Grewal and Valerie Harwood have come out against the overuse of the ODD diagnosis. Each was immediately diagnosed with acute ODD.
Research shows that diagnoses of oppositional defiant disorder have increased by 600 per cent in some schools, though other research concluded that “no it hasn’t”.
Dr Grewal told The Australian that parents often shop around among specialists until they get the diagnosis they want. Clinical studies show that the more you test a child for oppositional defiant disorder, the more they’re opposed to it.
The most common treatment for ODD is a spanking, around 300 milligrams per square inch.
