Good news for the 55% of Australians who want more expensive electricity

17 August 2009 | Joe Stella

A recent Herald/Nielsen poll shows that, despite Senate delays, 55 per cent of voters back the introduction of the Rudd Government’s emissions trading scheme, which would increase the cost of electricity.

Read more background from The Sydney Morning Herald.

But there’s good news for the majority of Australians who want electricity to be more expensive in three months’ time, when the Senate can next vote on the issue. You can make your power more expensive today by following these easy-to-follow tips.

Call your electricity retailer and ask about 100% GreenPower. Luckily, with uptake rates of about 10 per cent, there’s plenty more GreenPower to go around!

If you recently switched electricity retailers to get a better deal, just switch back! Take back control, call back EnergyAustralia, and be ready to apologise.

Saving money by bundling your gas and electricity? Stop doing that.

If you’re serious about expensive power, consider disconnecting from the mains and installing a diesel generator. To ensure that the environment is protected, insist that your new generator meet tough Euro 5 particulate standards and only buy diesel from green-coloured petrol stations like BP.

Travel forward in time and watch as CPI drives utility rate increases.

And if you can’t increase the cost of your electricity, you can always just use more. Why use carpet underlay when an electric blanket is just as good? Have a tech-savvy friend “hack” your toaster so it stays on 24/7. Or even just push your oven and fridge together, open the doors and watch them fight it out for thermal supremacy!

With these simple ideas, you and your family can simulate the benefits to your wallet—and the global climate—of the government’s proposed emissions trading scheme. All the benefits. We guarantee it.
