The state-run China Daily newspaper has conceded that two-thirds of the country’s organ donors are executed prisoners.
The remaining one-third of donors are people convicted of less serious offenses and fined one kidney.
Groups representing the victims of crime have slammed the practice, which sees thousands of convicted corneas, livers and other organs back on the streets well before their sentence is up.
The story emerged as Chinese officials attempt to increase volunteer organ donation. A new organ-donation register makes it easier for interested citizens to confess to capital crimes.
China’s obsession with the curative properties of executed prisoners may have been inspired by a poorly-dubbed bootleg version of The Green Mile.
On the other hand, practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine have long believed that sexual performance can be enhanced by eating ground-up rapist penis.
