Less than 24 hours after ‘Steve Irwin Day’ celebrations at Australia Zoo, Cape York’s Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve is ablaze—with countless animals believed to have perished.
The blaze, made worse by an inadequate fire hazard reduction regimen, is being interpreted as a clear message from the Irwins to the animal kingdom.
According to family sources, the fire, which has so far destroyed 20 per cent of the reserve and continues to burn unchecked, “that’s for Steve.”
Woodland creatures are desperate to make clear that the Irwins’ gripe is with the sea, not with them.
The Federal Government, which granted the reserve to the Irwin family in 2007, has promised swift action in the wake of the blaze, promising that if the reserve is substantially destroyed they will find other, better, things to name after Steve Irwin.
Early suggestions include the Steve Irwin Kosciuszko National Park, the Steve Irwin Westlink M7 Motorway and Steve Irwin’s Baz Luhrmann’s Australia.
