Victoria floods on track to implement all 67 Bushfires Royal Commission recommendations

6 September 2010 | Jebediah Cole and Joe Stella

Floodwaters continued to rise across Victoria today, with thousands evacuated from towns including Wangaratta and Shepparton.

Read more background from ABC News.

According to officials, parts of the state saw rainfall of up to 200mm over the weekend, although at times it seemed more like 20 centimetres.

Under the controversial “stay or go” policy, homeowners can choose not to evacuate if they believe they’ll have enough water on hand to beat back the flood as it approaches.

Authorities are urging livestock to congregate on makeshift islands so they can be seen by passing news helicopters.

The flood has been praised for showing leadership in the wake of the Bushfires Royal Commission, taking only a couple of days to implement all 67 recommendations and rendering the state impossible to burn.

The state government, still trying to restore credibility after the 2008 bushfires, are understood to have approached “South Eastern Low Pressure Zone” to be Emergency Services Minister.

Towns are expected to suffer significant water damage despite ALP efforts to sandbag marginal seats ahead of the next state election.
