Increasing numbers of Kiwi women having ‘social caesarians’

17 September 2002 | Joe Stella

Like so many women her age, Natalie Hodge claims that she is not addicted. But here she is, recovering from her third caesarian section this year.

Read more background from Dominion Post.

The 26-year-old has never been pregnant. A Daily Grind investigation into reports that “social caesarians” were widespead in the New Zealand health system has revealed that women as young as 19 are requesting the procedure because of peer pressure.

“What greater status symbol could there be than an abdominal scar?” College of Midwives midwifery adviser Norma Campbell told The Daily Grind. “It’s a wonder more people aren’t doing it.”

Others link the problem to the falling birthrate. But whatever the cause, it is clear that addiction is becoming a major problem, with as many as 4000 Kiwi women thought to be “popping c” on a regular basis.

For her part, Natalie denies that hers is an addiction.

“I can stop any time I want,” she says, “I’m just having social caesarians.”
